In the evenings, the old slave bell rings in time to enjoy a classic Cape Wine. Soft mellow candlelight, gleaming silver, coffee and truffles, with a frog serenade to end the evening.
Sample creative country cuisine prepared by chef Abbie Windvogel. Produce is selected daily and a three course menu is offered each evening, with each course providing a choice of two dishes. Vegetables and herbs are grown in Klippe Rivier's own gardens and ceps are picked in the forest in season.
Emphasis is placed on the local wines of the region, particularly the Breede River and Robertson area, with wines such as Graham Beck, Springfield, and Weltevrede amongst others.
South Africa is blessed with a variety of different cultures, a rich backdrop for interesting dishes. A brief history of the diversity of cultural groups introduced into the Cape is necessary in order to understand South Africa's complex culinary culture. The Dutch brought with them the Malaysian workforce of carpenters and craftsmen. The Malays in turn brought their unique food tastes to the Cape, and a hybrid cuisine developed, today commonly known as Cape-Malay cooking. Cape-Malay cooking places an emphasis on the dynamic use of rice and spices, often with an accent of fresh fish dishes.
Added to this, the influence of the Engllish settlers and the French provided more influences, and today typical African foods are also being "fused" with South African cuisine, making it an eclectic combination of many flavours and styles - uniquely African fusion food.
